The Science Behind the Bar

Soapmaking depends on precision. The amount and type of oils must be matched with the correct amount of lye and liquid. Temperature, water content, mixing, mold time, and cure time all influence the finished bar.

During saponification, the lye reacts with the fats and oils. In a properly formulated and completed recipe, the finished soap is no longer a bowl of oils and lye. It has become soap, with naturally produced glycerin remaining in the bar. That careful transformation is why cold-process soap is both a handmade art and a real chemical process.
